World War II Memorial Sculpture Dedication at KSU May 30, 2011

Kansas State University honored the Veterans on the WWII Memorial Plaza with the unveiling of a Sculpture. Artists Tim Chapman and Daniel Hunt created a piece

at once simple
and dynamic, transparent
and ever-changing.

Is your grandfather a hero?

The sky was perfect for the occasion--grey and blue, warm and windy, clouds deep with stories.
There was some electricity in the air, presence at the plaza.
The Program is posted below.

Here is my WWII vet:
Grandfather, who uncovered one of
The "camps" before anyone knew what that meant; he took photos as he thought no one would believe what he would have to tell them. He said he sent some of his men to round up locals to help build graves.

He also brought home a Nazi flag,
very large,
crimson with the  black and white symbol in the center,
which my grandmother purified by cutting out the swastica and adding more red,
thus creating the red base over which the white lacy tablecloth was laid for
Christmas Dinner!
Sweet grandmother.

Find Your Courage. The Nazis: A Warning from History--Archival Footage of Hitler and Those Who Were There (Memorial Day Weekend)

heinrich himmler
This multi disc set from BBC netflix taught me a thing or two. Very poignant, alarming, and detailed. If you have studied the holocaust over the years, this will fill in some details you may not have known. Clip at bottom of post, with a woman who watched her mother repeatedly brutalized.)

I intend to watch chapter 4 again later today or tomorrow and post some quotes and pictures which will chill you to the Very Bone. One aspect of this film is the time spent on the lead-up, the politics, the set up. The slow movement of the population to blindness, lack of courage, and sheep mentality.

the "Volksstrom" who were the last of the army
pic from bbc film nazis: warning from history

This film interviews those who were there, committing the crimes.
Some expressed remorse; others tried to rationalize what they did; others were very defensive.

There was a segment of an interview with a woman, who was a young girl when the russians were storming and destroying german cities. she describes the horror; that although the women were "disguised" the russian soldiers could recognize a "good figure"--and her mother was raped repeatedly every day. "mass suicides"
 "no longer human" "changed for the rest of her life"-- i will try tomorrow to post a small video clip of her story at the bottom of this post.

polish, gay, jew, etc.  Click on pic to enlarge.

I found this version of the chart HERE, where the author has some thoughtful notes, (including a reference to MAUS, which is fascinating to read). .. he states,"My study of Nazi persecution of homosexuals, combined with my reading of Maus by Art Spiegelman, made me wonder if there were any alternative mediums of interpretation of homosexual Holocaust victims. Spiegelman, a graphic artist, utilizes his craft to help him understand his father and document his family’s past. While I was unable to find anything quite as “alternative” as Maus, I did come across the trailer for the 2000 award-winning documentary film Paragraph 175..."

an amazing work of art- i'll lend you my copy if you can't find it...

Blogspot violations and theft -- why? Why steal entire posts? Bad bad dog.

I have accidentally discovered a blog that has LIFTED entire posts, dozens, maybe hundreds from me-- and apparently others,  thousands of posts. Just lifted them in their entirety and posted them!

Update: the posts come from blogs on architechture, health, art, etc. In the past 2 days--the blog is filled with smarmy porny ads so i think maybe the person is using the energies of other's pictures in search to get visitors to make some money. just a guess.

 http://lessos.blogspot.com/

when i saw a picture i had posted, coming up on search which led to this lessos site instead of my own, i was mystified--when i went there and found post after post that was my stuff, and a bunch of unrelated posts that seemed to be just lifted from other sites, it made me ask, why would someone do this?
Grr.
No, No!
while at first i tried to rationalize-- like, this person thinks "blogging" is getting a bunch of posts together--"Look! I'm blogging! Look how big my blog is and how many blogs i made today!"

but then all the porny ads went up.
all my posts from the past month are there, listed as by this person. Shedding Tears of Elizabeth Smart. My take on Joplin.

It makes me want to stop writing online.
I will not be posting much unless/until this gets cleared up. i do not want my entire blog to be used like this.

I have filed Report Abuse (an option which by the way no longer shows up on lessos blog) and have filled out the complaint form.
Who knows?
The two posts after this one, i have a few things to add.
then i think  i may have to stop for a while.

Shedding Tears for Elizabeth Smart

As you watch this video, ponder
how over the years, as you have heard of various horror crimes, in particular those involving kidnapping and torture of children-- how much you wanted to know that if ever a child was found, was saved--that she would be whole again, that she would be healed. Stronger than ever. That he would not be permanently wounded.

Elizabeth Smart, taken at age 14 at knifepoint from her bedroom, gave us some comfort
as she shared
factually, simply, graciously
with great insight and humble wisdom
her Moving On
and her confrontation with the criminal...

She has started a foundation--" I think one of the biggest ways to overcome any trial in life, to heal from any any kind of experience is by helping those around you --because by lifting those around you up
 you end up lifting yourself up as well..."
 here is the video
This is actually the moment many of us have waited for many times, for those we will never meet, for those we have prayed for. This is what by Grace we hope the recovery from monsters looks like.

A Secret? In giving, one receives. Actually? On a molecular level?

May 24 Abundance

How unseeing the world goes on! How unknowing of your heartaches and troubles, your battles won, your conquests, your difficulties.

But be thankful, both of you, that there is One who knows, One who marks every crisis, every effort, every heartache.

For you both, who are not idle hearers, you must know that every troubled soul I tell you of, is one for you to help. You do not help enough. As you help, help will flow back and your circle of helpfulness will widen more and more, ever more and more.
Just feel that you are two of My disciples, present at the feeding of the five thousand, and that to you I hand out the food, and you pass it on, and ever more and more. You can always say with so few loaves and fishes "We have only enough for our own needs." It was not only My Blessing, but the Passing-on of the disciples that worked the miracle.

Get a feeling of bounteous giving into your beings. They were "all filled." There was a supply over.

I give with a large Hand and Heart. Note the draught of fishes. The net brake, the boat began to sink with the lavishness of My Gift. Lose sight of all limitations.

Abundance is God's Supply. Turn out all limited thoughts. Receive showers and in your turn - shower.

Theodore Roethke - I Knew A Woman. Psychopaths, Poetry, Dylan and Three Girls' Tales from NPR in the Morning

It is nice to hear poetry in the morning. The one read this morning was so lovely--morning mists, glisten rain on the darkly cloudfilled sky. entire poem below.

Theodore Roethke - I Knew A Woman

I knew a woman, lovely in her bones,
When small birds sighed, she would sigh back at them;
Ah, when she moved, she moved more ways than one:
The shapes a bright container can contain!
Of her choice virtues only gods should speak,
Or English poets who grew up on Greek
(I'd have them sing in chorus, cheek to cheek.)

How well her wishes went! She stroked my chin,
She taught me Turn, and Counter-turn, and stand;
She taught me Touch, that undulant white skin:
I nibbled meekly from her proffered hand;
She was the sickle; I, poor I, the rake,
Coming behind her for her pretty sake

(But what prodigious mowing did we make.)

Love likes a gander, and adores a goose:
Her full lips pursed, the errant note to seize;
She played it quick, she played it light and loose;
My eyes, they dazzled at her flowing knees;
Her several parts could keep a pure repose,
Or one hip quiver with a mobile nose

(She moved in circles, and those circles moved.)

Let seed be grass, and grass turn into hay:
I'm martyr to a motion not my own;
What's freedom for? To know eternity.
I swear she cast a shadow white as stone.
But who would count eternity in days?
These old bones live to learn her wanton ways:
(I measure time by how a body sways.)
