In one, an assailant held a gun to the head of a 30-year-old woman while raping her in front of passengers on a bus as the driver proceeded down a main avenue. In another, a 14-year-old girl from a hillside slum was raped on one of Rio’s most famous stretches of beach.

A women's-only subway car in Rio de Janeiro. A wave of rapes in Brazil has cast a spotlight on the conflicted attitudes toward women in the country.

One woman was raped in front of passengers on a public bus that traveled along a main road in Rio. Other sexual assaults have occurred on smaller private vans that are common in the city.

In yet another case, men abducted and raped a working-class woman in a transit van as it wended through densely populated areas. The police failed to investigate, and a week later the same men raped a 21-year-old American student in the same van, pummeling her face and beating her male companion with a metal bar.

“Unfortunately, it had to happen to her before anyone would help me,” said the Brazilian woman raped in the transit van. “I was like, ‘Could this have been avoided if they had paid attention to my case?’ ”

A recent wave of rapes in Rio — some captured on video cameras — have cast a spotlight on the unresolved contradictions of a nation that is coming of age as a world power. Brazil has a woman as president, a woman as a powerful police commander and a woman as the head of its national oil company — and yet, it was not until an American was raped that the authorities got fully involved and arrested suspects in the case.

In some ways, Brazil’s experience echoes recent events in India and Egypt, where horrific attacks have prompted outrage and soul searching, revealing deep fissures in each society. In Brazil, it has unleashed a debate about whether the authorities are more concerned about defending the privileged and Rio’s international image than about protecting women at large.

In India, the recent death of a student, who was gang-raped as her male companion was beaten on a bus under similar circumstances, has highlighted a prevailing view that women, no matter how much progress they make, are still fair game, unprotected by an ineffectual government..."

Update: Rape victims are often told, "you should be over it by now..." or, "It's been a year, move on--" but those who have suffered ANY trauma, real, deep trauma--know that the Post Trauma Stress can be so heavy that it indeed becomes a matter which must be addressed medically and psychologically.
I have worked with rape victims who were basically told by the police

From the Daily Mail: “More details have emerged of Lara Logan's terrifying ordeal at the hands of a frenzied mob. The 39-year-old foreign correspondent for CBS News show 60 Minutes was separated from her film crew in Cairo on February 11 and surrounded by as many as 200 men in Tahrir Square at the height of the anti-Mubarak demonstrations. According to one source, reported in The Sunday Times newspaper, sensitive parts of her body were covered in red marks that were originally thought to have been bite marks. After further examination they were revealed to be from aggressive pinching. It has also been revealed that she was stripped, punched and slapped by the crowd, which was labelling her a spy and chanting 'Israeli' and 'Jew' as they beat her.And medical sources have revealed that marks on her body were consistent with being whipped and beaten with the makeshift poles that were used to fly flags during the demonstration. An unnamed friend of the reporter told The Sunday Times: 'Lara is getting better daily. The psychological trauma is as bad as, if not worse than, the physical injuries. She might talk about it at sometime in the future, but not now.'



(After being taken to the Four Seasons hotel, she was treated and sedated by the hotel doctor. Within hours of the attack she was was flown out of the country and spent five days in a New York hospital.) Witnesses say the mainly peaceful protests to end Mubarak's rule had taken a more violent turn after the Egyptian president announced his resignation. The military presence controlling the amount of people entering Tahrir Square seemed to evaporate, and an angrier element had flowed in. Miss Logan was attacked around 1am as she filmed in the square. Egyptian state media had been publishing negative stories about foreign journalists, with many reports alleging that many Israeli spies were masquerading as news crews. Days before her attack, Miss Logan had been held in Alexandria on suspicion of being foreign spies.

There is so much wrong

 with Mr. Jaffar's response, it is hard to know where to start condemning it. Are we to understand that if Ms. Eltahawy _did_ have a press card, she would not have been sexually assaulted? Or perhaps she would only have been assaulted by people other than the Central Security Forces...? Anyone with a memory span exceeding that of a gnat will remember the ordeal of CBS reporter Lara Logan, who was sexually assaulted by an Egyptian mob, in Tahrir Square, last February.

But here's the kicker:

 The societal reality underlying this event might be even more disturbing than the random sexual violence this attack appears to represent. Ms. Eltahawy penned an article in June of this year entitled 'These "Virginity Tests" Will Spark Egypt's Next Revolution' (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/jun/02/egypt-next-revolution-virginity-tests). Ms. Eltahawy's critique alleged and condemned state-sponsored sexual assaults in downtown Cairo four years ago that targeted girls and women during a religious festival. Ms. Eltahawy claimed the police watched and did nothing. The same article also cited startling statistics that more than 80% of [Egyptian] women now say they've been sexually harassed, and more than 60% of men admit to having done so.

Most people, before this week, might have been forgiven for assuming that the attack on Ms. Eltahawy was an aberration, rather than reflective of current norms in Egyptian culture. So what do we make of Mr. Jaffar's bizarre statement? Are we to now understand and accept that gang rape is acceptable as par for the course in Tahrir Square (the shining symbol of Egyptian democracy)? Should sexual abuse be expected by any reporter as a natural risk to be assumed when covering the Arab Spring ..."

“Society does not accept such things being aired in public because they consider it too personal and too private,” explains Hafsa Halawa, an Egyptian lawyer....Violations against women are therefore hugely underreported in Egypt -- one recent report from 2003 found as many as 98 percent of rape and sexual assault cases are not reported to authorities.
This notion is hardly restricted to Egypt, however. Social taboos and safety fears prevent many abused women from seeking help, and underreporting of sexual assault and rape by women is a global phenomenon ... The female activists were detained on various charges they maintain are false, one of which was violation of curfew – lawyers said the girls were detained at 3:00 pm and there was no curfew at the time...."

After listening to Obama speak tonight about intervention in the humanitarian crisis in Libya, i pondered how there is a humanitarian crisis for women across time, geography, economics. What makes a crisis important enough to intervene?

A Wichita rape victim is outraged that her attacker was paroled, allowing him to pose as a police officer and sexually assault another woman in kansas City, Kan. 55 year-old Wesley Watson raped Lisa Clancy Nolla in 1980 when she was 14 years old. Now Watson faces an April Sentencing after he pleaded guilty to several charges in the December attack."  more from previous victim HERE   excerpt: Nolla wrote in a 2004 letter to the Kansas Parole Board that although Watson appeared to have no major behavior problems in prison, "when you look at his behavior while in the community it is a different story. This man seeks out, follows and attacks his prey." "He only does well in prison because there are no children or young women to violate, but the minute he is released he is out on the prowl again," she wrote. "I am here today to save the future victim of Wesley Watson.
