Godspeed Neil Armstrong

We Loved the Moon more after 1969.

"A lot of people couldn't figure out Armstrong," the author Tom Wolfe wrote in his novelization of
the space race, The Right Stuff. Maybe that was because there was nothing to figure out, he was exactly who he said he was, a pilot and an engineer.

Teenage Girl Held Captive Three Years in Illinois Escapes

Again: a young girl held captive, beaten,  raped, finally escapes. I have to wonder, How many of these are undetected?
Three years of captivity resulted in a child. Unimaginable.

Elizabeth Smart. Phillip Garrido and Jaycee Lee Dugard
The Chicago Tribune video and story HERE
The 2 year old boy in the house is taken away

"... A teenager held captive in a house for more than three years before escaping with a relative's help initially went there voluntarily but wasn't allowed to leave when she wanted to go home, an Illinois police chief said Friday.
...the 19-year-old St. Louis woman bolted from the home Monday and told investigators her time in captivity included almost daily beatings and sexual assaults. One of those attacks resulted in a now-2-year-old boy rescued when a police SWAT team raided the home Thursday and arrested a 25-year-old man and his mother, Clark said.
The police chief said the three days between the teen's report and the raid on the home was largely spent substantiating her story. Clark also said investigators were working a separate sexual-assault case and lacked the manpower to go any faster.
...St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly, the county's top prosecutor, told The Associated Press on Friday that conditions in the home were "definitely deplorable."
Initial evidence suggests that "some of the details are consistent with what the young lady is saying, and I think there's something to it." he said. "We're still trying to figure out what the heck is going on."
Clark said the teenager met the man socially "through someone else when they were partying, and a relationship built," eventually leading to her visit of his home about the time she was reported missing.

The trubune also reported, "The young woman has told police she repeatedly tried to escape the house, which is on Washington Park's busiest street and next door to a convenience store, just a half mile from a freeway. But her captor chased her down each time and forced her back to the home at gunpoint, Clark said."

It seems to horrible to contemplate. we know that many women, many children, some men lead lives of quiet pain, assault, desperation and abuse.

The Beauty of Fractals.

As everyone knows by now, Fractals are typically self-similar patterns, where self-similar means they are "the same from near as from far"-- Fractals may be exactly the same at every scale, or as illustrated in Figure 1, they may be nearly the same at different scales. The definition of fractal goes beyond self-similarity per se to exclude trivial self-similarity and include the idea of a detailed pattern repeating itself.
As mathematical equations, fractals are usually nowhere differentiable, which means that they cannot be measured in traditional ways. An infinite fractal curve can be perceived of as winding through space differently from an ordinary line, still being a 1-dimensional line yet having a fractal dimension indicating it also resembles a surface.  A fractal is a mathematical set that has a fractal dimension that usually exceeds its topological dimension and may fall between the integers. (wiki)

Jack (John) OShea was my art teacher the year Fractals became envogue. we were very hip.

 Perspective and mysterious things HERE

Figure 1a. The Mandelbrot set illustrates self-similarity. As you zoom in on the image at finer and finer scales, the same pattern re-appears so that it is virtually impossible to know at which level you are looking.
Figure 1b. Mandelbrot zoomed 6x
Figure 1c. Mandelbrot zoomed 100x
Figure 1d. Even 2000 times magnification of the Mandelbrot set uncovers fine detail resembling the full set.

When Politicians Talk Stupid about Rape, Heads Roll. When Rapists Rape --Not So Much...

It is hardly worth commenting on Todd Akin's strange statements. But it speaks to a bigger issue: Senator Brown, Mitt Romney and President Obama should have taken the opportunity to point out that a woman is raped every two minutes in the United States and three women die from domestic violence each day in this country...

As Wendy Murphy says,
"... Hoping to distance himself from the far right, Republican Senator Scott Brown spoke out against Akin's remarks.  Mitt Romney also criticized the guy, as did President Obama who declared at a press conference that, "Rape is rape” and that we shouldn’t be "parsing and qualifying and slicing what types of rape we are talking about…" He's right.  We shouldn't.   But if he really believes that "rape is rape", why did he stay silent when Whoopi Goldberg announced on The View that it wasn't "rape rape" when Roman Polanski drugged and anally attacked a thirteen year-old child?  Why did he say nothing when his friend and ideological ally, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, described a convicted rapist as "thoughtful" after the guy violated an elderly woman for eight hours, tied a phone cord around her neck and left her for dead?  And why was Obama deafeningly silent about Kobe Bryant, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, etc.  Talk about qualifying and slicing!

Before this mess gets spun into a referendum on the women's vote, it should be emphasized that politicians on both sides of the aisle have done nothing to stop the epidemic of violence against women.
Instead of criticizing Todd Akin, Senator Brown, Mitt Romney and President Obama should have taken the opportunity to point out that a woman is raped every two minutes in the United States and three women die from domestic violence each day in this country.  Politicians who really give a damn should be demanding that we do more and should be campaigning on their plans to stop the violence..."    A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream.
The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her
bag to share her food.   The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman
to give it to him.  She did so without hesitation.
The traveler left rejoicing in his good fortune.  He knew the stone was worth enough to
give him security for a lifetime.
But,  a few days later, he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.
"I've been thinking," he said.  "I know how valuable this stone is, but I give it back in
the hope that you can give me something even more precious.  Give me what you
have within you that enabled you to give me the stone."

Crucifixions and More--Free Speech awake much?

 Headlines to weep by.

excerpt: "... The Arab Spring takeover of Egypt by the Muslim Brotherhood has run amok, with reports from several different media agencies that the radical Muslims have begun crucifying opponents of newly installed President Mohammed Morsi. Middle East media confirm that during a recent rampage, Muslim Brotherhood operatives “crucified those opposing Egyptian President Muhammad Morsi naked on trees in front of the presidential palace while abusing others.”"
